Setting up email alias forwarding

I am new to Exchange Online but have been a Hosted Exchange customer and managed my own domains for years. On every email server system I have ever used, it is possible to have both mailboxes and aliases. In some cases the alias addresses are delivered to a mailbox on the server and ion other cases they are forwarded to off-server addresses.

For example a mailbox named "Robert@mydomain.com" could have aliases set up to receive messages addressed to "bob@mydomain.com" and "bobby@mydomain.com." I have figured out how to set this up in Office365.

What I cannot figure out is how to cause "johnny@mydomain.com" to be delivered to "johnny1234@yahoo.com" or some other external address without that address needing its own mailbox on the server. I have heard this service referred to as "email alias" and "email redirect" over the years.

I submitted a support question and got a nice return phone call. I was not able to log in when he called because its a holiday and I was getting lunch for my kids but he seemed to understand what I was trying to do and offered to email me the directions on how to do it. Alas, I now have that email and it simply tells me how to forward all mail coming to a particular mailbox. This is not what I am wanting to do.

Can anyone out in the user community give me a hand with this? I have searched to no avail. I can't imagine that such a basic function of other email services isn't offered in one as robust as Office365.
