Different passwords for Outlook and OWA

Hello... I helped someone at the office to set up outlook with our Office 365 account, this went fine with no glitches, she also set up her iPhone fine. Apparently when we tried to set up her OWA she did not like the idea that she needed to have a Capital and a number as part of the password. However, she set it up and started using OWA.

A couple of weeks ago, she was going on vacation and wanted to try the OWA to see if she could get access while out of the office. She could NOT log in. She tried different passwords, and variations of the password but it did not work. She was fine logging in Outlook 2007 though, with no problem and her iPhone was syncing. After vacation, she said she had no problem, the system let her in later that day.

Today she could NOT log in to her Outlook at the PC, suddenly it was asking her for the user name and password dialog. I tried to put in the outlook settings again, but it was no go. She was able to use her OWA, and that's how she was working while this was going on. While trying to log in at the PC through Outlook, She said she was trying several passwords or variations, and then she said: "I'm even trying the OWA password" I said well, that SHOULD be the same as this Outlook password, she said: "No, the OWA password has a capital letter, and a number, my Outlook does not have that, it is different."

Well, I am stumped, How could she had been working all this time with different passwords? can you have a password to log in to Outlook and another one to check your email? Am I missing something?
