messages not showing up in inbox

I have been using my outlook account for a couple of months and I had no issues. All of a sudden, my messages weren't showing up in my inbox. However, they were in my unread folder. The error message I keep getting when I try to refresh my inbox is "notifications can not be retrieved. " Can anyone help me Thanks
