Using SMTP for third party application

I have a customer who uses a third party application for administration of employees. Among other things they need to be able to send out email via the applcation. I have set the SMTP settings in the application according to instructions I found about using SMTP in Office 365 as follows:

Server: Taken from the External SMTP settings in the Online services portal, in our case it was pod51015.outlook.com

Port: 587

Encryption: SSL/TLS

User name & password are set to the Exchange Online account of the user who uses the program, and the application is set to send the email from the same user.

When attempting to send an email through the application using these settings I still get an error that it cannot connect to the SMTP server. I just wanted to verify whether or not these settings are correct so that I know if I should be troubleshooting these settings or something else.
