Setting SMTP with a Distribution Group email address as the FROM

I am having troubles trying to set up an account on Outlook using Office 365 (MicrosoftOnline) SMTP with the FROM set as the email address of a public group in my account.  I get the following error message;

            550 5.7.1 Client does not have permissions to send as this sender

Is there a way to overcome this problem?
